Beware of the Alligator

wilmington, nc alligator All through the Wilmington, NC area there are apartment complexes, housing developments and neighborhoods with small ponds that are either man made or natural.

My apartment complex is one of those that have several “ponds.” (I use quotes because they aren’t very attractive and it’s not like there are trees and other vegetation surrounding the pond.) I’ve seen tiny fish in the pond and I’ve wanted to throw some blue gill in there and you’ll see the occasional bird peck around at the water… but the real star is the elusive alligator that lives in the nearby ponds.

This reptile has not been seen by many so he is a bit mythical but the complex does have signs warning of the cold-blooded creature. But it all honestly, I didn’t think he existed. I thought the sign was just a legal precaution.

But I’m a believer now.

wilmington, nc alligator 2My friend and WECT meteorologist Craig Carnesi, was golfing at the adjacent golf course when he first spotted the alligator. Luckily he had his trusty iPhone and shot a few pictures (to the left). According to Craig, the alligator was just minding his own business and didn’t seem threatened at all.

Apparently, the little guy  lives in the ponds around the golf course and my apartment complex. You’ll be the first to know when I see him with my own eyes.

This weekend we ended up talking to some people from one of the buildings near the pond that the gator is known to frequent. (Long story about how we ended up visiting with them)

Not only does this gator frequent the pond, but the creek that connects to it is known to be home to many bass. Some folks like to spend evenings (after hours for the golf course) fishing back there.

Do you know anyone who likes to bass fish? :-)
