The Aquarium Pier at Carolina Beach

carolina beach boardwalk So this is the third time I’ve heard this mentioned. This past time, a news release was posted on the Yahoo! fishing forum that I belong to. It’s quite an interesting an idea and I’d loved to see it be approved.

There has been mention that an educational type of pier might be built in Carolina Beach near the boardwalk area.

According to the release, one of the goals of the pier is to inspire conservation and appreciation of the area’s fish, wildlife, plants, etc… In addition to a multi-story pier house, the Aquarium suggests the pier should also have exhibits, classrooms, a gift shop, bait shop, event rooms and more.

The proposed pier would be similar to a pier that is planned for Nags Head, NC. The piers will extend 1,000 feet into the ocean and will be made of durable concrete pilings, which will help the pier withstand ocean wear and tear.

Of course this would be great for the Carolina Beach boardwalk. In the year that I’ve been in Wilmington, it seems they have put a lot of time and effort into improving the boardwalk area. This might be what the boardwalk needs. Although, if fishing is permitted from the pier (which from the press release, that seems to be the case), I’m not sure what it would do to the business at Carolina Beach Pier and Kure Beach Pier. I’d hate to see a new pier financially hurt a pier that’s been around for years.

I hope this pier is planned for the near future. I love hearing about this stuff but it seems that it’s planned for 10 years down the road. And when 10 years comes and goes, there is something more “important” to spend the money on.
