Broad and Reel

I absolutely love finding articles on the web about women fishing . Ya I know the article was written over 15 years ago but the point still holds true. I think there has been progress made…granted I was nine-years-old (ha ha) when that article was written but just in the past few years I’ve seen more and more pink and purple fishing gear. And I don’t mean Barbie fishing rods. It seems that companies are designing quality gear for women who fish (Obviously my bright pink fly vest is designed for a woman and my Cabela’s wading boots are for women, I also have a pink Sage VT2 fly rod blank — see picture below). It’s so exciting to see the new stuff. I wish I had an endless supply of money to buy it all.

Every time I see another woman fishing whether she’s 10 or 85, I feel like we are friends. The reality is that we’ve probably never said a word to each other.

Anyway, don’t get me wrong, I do not think men are inferior to women and I appreciate most fishing advice from men, especially my boyfriend. But, can you blame me for being excited about this!? After all fishing is a sport dominated by men.

My favorite quote from the NY Times article is “It [fishing] is a sport that does not require brute strength.’To succeed in fly fishing, you need balance, grace and smarts,’ said Silvio Calabi, the editor in chief of Fly Rod and Reel Magazine. ‘It is ideal for women.’”

Ya… every opportunity I get to use a pink sparkly lure or fly I take it! So what?!
